Site Safe New Zealand is the construction industry's independent,
non-profit health and safety organisation with the mission of
improving the culture of safety in the industry.
Small Business Safety Package
For smaller sized building and construction businesses (up to 20 employees), Site Safe has a value package to meet your health and safety needs.
By law you must prevent harm to your employees and others who enter your building site. The key actions you have to take are:
- Manage hazards
- Train and supervise your staff on health and safety matters
- Have an emergency plan and procedures
- Investigate and take action on incidents and accidents
- Ensure the safety of others who enter your site eg contractor management
The Contractor and Subbie’s Site Safety kit comes as part of a package – choose either standard or premier for your company size. See below for package contents:

Once enrolled into the package customers will receive (by email) supporting information such as an ICE Pack ( In Case of Emergency), typical hazards by trades and a sample onsite contractor register for who is on site.
Site Safe membership will give you access to extensive safety information such as access to over 50 tool box talks for your use (hard copies can be made available), and regular E-Updates on safety matters.
Membership provides major discounts on Site Safe training and services from our team of Safety, Health and Environmental Advisors . Membership discounts are based on a loyalty system with discounts of up to 30% for a 5 year membership.

Canterbury Earthquake Information
Key information from Site Safe and the Department of Labour
The main hazards to look out for are:

- Structural Safety - What's collapsed, can I fix this or does it need further examination by an expert?
- Working at Heights - Chimney, masonry removal, roof work, any work at height, safe ladder use, scaffolding, elevated work platforms.
- Falling Materials – Isolate the area, keep public and children away using fencing, site signage.
- Health -Demolition , dusts , noise from equipment, sewage, water, asbestos information.
- Utilities - Power, water, gas, sewage.
- After shocks - Where and when the next after-shock hits - don't stand under something that could collapse, or be in a basement, or standing under bricks.
- Machinery and plant - Only competent workers to use these, otherwise keep away.
- Confined Spaces - Under floor work, ceiling spaces, sewers, ducts, shafts, silos and pits.
- Others - Members of public, home owners and observers.
- Housekeeping - Don’t rely on others to clean up, keep your work area tidy as it may impact on other trades or public.
- Site Signage –Informing everyone of hazards and restricted access areas, what Personal Protective Equipment for skin, ears and eyes and clothing must be worn, who is the main site contact.
- Emergency Procedures – What to do if there is another earthquake while working, Identify safe clear entry/exit points; ensure all staff are aware of procedures.
- Site Specific Safety Plans – If you require help with your Safety Plans/Hazard Registers/ Emergency plans for demolition or rebuilding work then please feel free to contact us.

Helping to cope with Stress
One of the major health issues for people dealing with the earthquake is stress. To assist your employees and their families impacted by the quake, EAP Services has put together some information sheets on the care of children and adults dealing with trauma.
